Genesis 3:14-24
The Curse
Why sickness, disease and death?
Why earthquakes, hurricanes and tornadoes?
Why is there so much difficulty in marriage?
Why must child-rearing be so painful?
A Broken Relationship
“Walking with God in obedience will keep us from sin, but sin will keep us from walking with God.”
Isa 59:1 Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. 2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you,
so that he will not hear.
V.14-15 Serpent- nachash (naw-khawsh'); a snake; properly, to hiss, or whisper
“Another one bites the dust!”
Isa 65:25 The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, but dust will be the serpent's food.
Mic 7:17 They will lick dust like a snake, like creatures that crawl on the ground. They will come trembling out of their dens; they will turn in fear to the LORD our God and will be afraid of you.
A reminder of when man decided he knew better than God
V.15 “Enmity”- ill will, hatred, and a mutual antagonism.
“he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
Col 2:13 He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
The consequences of sin
V.16 “Greatly increase your pain”
“Don’t blame me, blame Eve!”
“Your desire will be for your husband”- a longing
1. A deep attraction to her husband.
2. A desire to rule (See Genesis 4:7)
Eph 5:21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. 22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy,
Simple but not easy
V. 17 “Because you listened to your wife...”
Others may make it easier but we are guilty.
1 Cor 10:13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
V.18 Work will be characterized by pain and toil.
V.19 A proper perspective
Only because we bear the image of God is life sacred
V.20
“Woman”- Out of man
“Eve”- Life or life-producer
“More Than a Woman”
V.21 “The LORD made garments of skin”
Better than fig leaves
1. What type of skin?
2. How did God get that skin?
•First, a lamb for Adam and Eve
•Later a lamb for the nation
“The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”
What are you using to cover yourself?
Isa 64:6 All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.
Clothed with Christ!
Rom 13:14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ
Gal 3:26 You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
V.22-24 A gracious act of God.
The answer is Jesus
