What Does God Say About Sex?
Sex is good but not all sex is good.
1 Cor 7:1 Now for the matters you wrote about: It is good for a man not to marry. 2 But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband. 3 The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4 The wife's body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband. In the same way, the husband's body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife. 5 Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. 6 I say this as a concession, not as a command. 7 I wish that all men were as I am. But each man has his own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that. 8 Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I am. 9 But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
“immorality”- porneia- Illicit sexual activity that includes…
1. Fornication: (1 Cor. 7)
2. Adultery (Mt. 5:27-28)
3. Incest (Lev. 18)
4. Bestiality (Lev. 18:23)
5. Homosexuality (Romans 1:26, 1 Cor. 6:9)
Why should we wait to engage in sexual activity until marriage?
1. God says to wait and He knows best
2. Spiritually healthier
3. Physically healthier
4. Emotionally healthier
5. Shows consideration to our spouse
Three purposes of sex
· Procreation
· Gratification
· Communication
Procreation- Biological and spiritual
Gen 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it.
A picture of God’s relationship to His own
Eph 5:31 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." 32 This is a profound mystery-but I am talking about Christ and the church.
Making spiritual children is more important than physical babies
Isa 54:1 "Sing, O barren woman, you who never bore a child; burst into song, shout for joy, you who were never in labor; because more are the children of the desolate woman than of her who has a husband," says the LORD.
Gratification
Prov 5:15 Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well. 16 Should your springs overflow in the streets, your streams of water in the public squares? 17 Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers. 18 May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.
19 A loving doe, a graceful deer — may her breasts satisfy you always [I don’t know of any procreative purposes of a woman’s breast], may you ever be captivated by her love. 20 Why be captivated, my son, by an adulteress? Why embrace the bosom of another man's wife?
Sexual intimacy between a husband and a wife should be enjoyed often
1 Cor 7:3 The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband.
Gratitude to the LORD
1 Tim 4:1 The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. 2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. 3 They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. 4 For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.
Communication
Let’s get to “know” our spouses
Gen 4:1 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain,
Gen 4:17 And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch.
Sex is an opportunity to express and say, “I love you and am united to you.”
